Xiaodong Li, Ph.D.
Assistant Researcher, Seaweed Germplasm Bank, Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences
Taishan Industry Leading Talent (Blue Talent)
Collaborative Innovation Engineer of Weihai City
Dr. Xiaodong Li obtained a B.Sc. in Aquaculture (2014) and an M.Sc. in Marine Biology (2018) from Ocean University of China, and a Ph.D. in Marine Biology (2021) from the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS). He is currently an Assistant Researcher at IOCAS and has long been engaged in the genetic breeding and industrialization of economic brown algae.
He has led or participated in four national and provincial research projects with total funding exceeding CNY 1.2 million. His research outputs include 9 SCI-indexed papers and 5 publications in Chinese core journals. He serves as a reviewer for journals such as Algal Research and Frontiers in Marine Science.
Dr. Li has been deeply involved in breeding new strains of economic brown algae across Liaoning, Shandong, and Fujian provinces. The newly developed strains he helped create have been cultivated over 60,000 hectares, generating over CNY 450 million in direct economic value. His achievements include the chromosome-level assembly and annotation of the kelp (Saccharina japonica) genome, comprehensive trait assessment and genetic structure analysis of Chinese cultivated kelp populations, and the first identification of genetic and phenotypic homogeneity issues in kelp aquaculture in China, along with proposed technical solutions.
He also led the successful cultivation of the warm-water kelp Undaria pinnatifida in subtropical Fujian waters and was the first author reporting the large-scale kelp rot outbreak in Rongcheng, Shandong (2021–2022).
