Dr. Xiaodong Li is an Assistant Researcher at the Seaweed Germplasm Repository, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture (2014) and a Master’s degree in Science (2018) from Ocean University of China, as well as a Ph.D. in Science (2021) from the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. His research focuses on the genetic improvement and industrial applications of economically significant brown algae. Over the years, he has independently led three major research projects, including the Shandong Provincial Key R&D Program, with a total funding of 1.2 million RMB. Between 2019 and 2024, he has published six SCI-indexed papers and five articles in leading Chinese journals.
Dr. Xiaodong Li has contributed extensively to the breeding of new strains of brown algae in major production regions, including Liaoning, Shandong, and Fujian provinces. His efforts have led to the development of new strains that have been cultivated over a total area of 90,000 mu, generating a direct economic value of 450 million RMB. He has also completed chromosome-level genome assembly and annotation for kelp, as well as trait evaluation and genetic structure analysis of cultivated kelp strains in China. This work was the first to reveal the genetic and phenotypic homogenization of kelp populations, offering practical solutions to address the issue.
In addition, Dr. Xiaodong Li was the lead author in reporting the first large-scale kelp rot outbreak in Rongcheng, Shandong (2021–2022). He also led the successful cultivation of the warm-water brown alga Undaria pinnatifida in the subtropical waters of Fujian Province, further contributing to the diversification and industrial development of brown algae resources.
